Our Core Values
Meet Dr Sarah Butler
Dr Butler joined the NHS in 2012, specialising in trauma and PTSD therapy. Her training includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).
She completed her doctorate in Counselling Psychology in 2023, during which she spent three years exploring clients' experiences of intensive therapy for post-traumatic stress. Her research can be viewed here.
Sarah has presented her research at the Counselling Psychology Conference (2022), EMDR Europe Conference (2023), The Inaugural Conference on Intensive Therapy (2024) and the EMDR UK annual conference (2026). Sarah is also a member of the NHS clinical entrepreneurial program (CEP) which supports clinicians in developing innovative care solutions. In 2024 Sarah formed the EMDR Association UK Special Interest Group for Intensive EMDR and now presides as Chair.
Sarah is passionate about making intensive therapy accessible to everyone, including clients and therapists. She has delivered workshops to therapists wishing to develop their practice in this area and provided consultation to organisations developing intensive therapy services.
In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and travelling.

Services
We provide expert advice and consultation to a wide range of organisations seeking to trial or adopt intensive therapy for their service users and beneficiaries. Leveraging our specialised knowledge, we assist researchers, service developers, and individuals by solving problems, offering strategic insights, and providing valuable guidance to those aiming to implement intensive therapy within their organisations.

Our History
Access Intensive Therapy was founded by Dr Sarah Butler, building on her doctoral research, which explored clients' experiences of intensive therapy for post-traumatic stress. Through her research, Dr Butler discovered that intensive therapy was as effective as weekly sessions, while also being cost-effective, time-efficient, and offering
clients the benefits of a structured and predictable process.
In 2023, the Mitland Plan was developed to provide clients with a structured and coherent intensive therapy package that includes all the components necessary for the best possible experience and outcomes. These components include resources for self-directed learning to prepare for therapy, access to specialist therapists,
evidence-based treatments, and follow-up support.
The Mitland Plan has since attracted interest from therapists in private practice, charities seeking innovative and
cost-effective ways to support their beneficiaries, and researchers looking for a standardised treatment approach for their studies.
